I’m lucky enough to spend a whole lot of time with animals of various kinds and some of this time is walking around with dogs like Milo. Because I spend a lot of my day doing chores and walking, I listen to a lot of podcasts! And there are more than a few podcasts about animals. Some shows are dedicated to specific animals while other shows might have an occasional episode about different animals. These shows and episodes are a great way to learn about animals but they’re also just a lot of fun to listen to!

Here are some of my favorite podcast shows and episodes related to animals:

Shows

Can I Pet Your Dog?

This show is hosted by two dog lovers, Allegra Ringo and Renee Colvert. With almost 200 episodes and a very popular Facebook group/community, this show is a great listen for any dog lover, whether you have your own dog or not!

The Golden Ratio Podcast

From the owners of the dogs of The Golden Ratio 4, this podcast is all about dogs and the internet’s favorite family of golden retrievers! GR Mom and GR Dad, as they call themselves, talk about topics like what it’s like fostering dogs, caring for five golden retrievers, updates on their dogs and some of their fosters, and all sorts of dog related things. On occasion, they do talk about other things like running but otherwise, this podcast is a great resource and a great way to learn more about the Golden Ratio 4 dogs (Hopper, Venkman, Queso, Maggie, and Jasmine).

Off Exhibit at the Maryland Zoo

This show interviews staff at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, MD about what it’s like to work at an AZA-accredited zoo, the conservation work that the zoo does, and the animals that live there. There’s an episode about giraffe calves, preventative medicine for animals, and so much more!

Episodes

BBC World Service: The Documentary – It’s a Dog’s Life (March 22, 2017)

This episode is all about dogs! Ayo Akinwolere visits Territorio de Zaguates (Land of the Strays) in Costa Rica to talk about rescuing dogs in a place where dogs outnumber the people 100 to 1. Akinwolere also looks into the relationships we as humans have with dogs, both from a scientific and individual lens.

NPR’s Code Switch: Dog Show! (Nov 28, 2018)

In this episode, the Code Switch team talks about dogs! Shereen Marisol Meraji looks into whether our dogs can be racist or not, how dogs interact with the world, and how if we want good dogs, we need to be good people. Then, Gene Demby talks about pit bulls with Bronwen Dickey, an author who has written about pit bulls.

Radiolab: Galapagos (July 16, 2014)

This Radiolab episode is one of my all-time favorite podcast episodes and talks about different issues affecting the Galapagos islands. In the episode, Tim Howard traveled to the Galapagos Islands to talk to biologists and conservationists about the work being done to preserve the islands and the animals that live there. We hear about efforts to bring back the Pinta Island tortoises, getting rid of goats that were invading a few islands, and bugs that were eating away at finches.

Reply All: Underdog (April 3, 2015)

Any current podcast list wouldn’t be complete without an episode from Reply All. This specific episode is one of the first from the show and takes a look at dogs on the internet, especially Marnie! If you’ve been on social media/the internet over the past couple of years and you like dogs, you’ve probably seen Marnie and her cute face!

Stuff You Should Know: Various Episodes

As one of the longest running podcasts from How Stuff Works, Stuff You Should Know has a few different episodes about animals from the 10 years they’ve been doing the show. They have over 1,000 episodes and more than a couple about different animals! Here are just a few:

All of these shows and episodes are just some of the many radio/podcast shows and episodes about animals! Podcasting is an ever-growing medium and while it seems counterintuitive, there are many great shows and episodes about all kinds of animals. Are there any animal related shows or episodes that you love? Let me know in the comments!
